The castle is mentioned in chronicles since 1375 as the castle of Vitovt and subsequent Lithuanian princes.
It was built on a lake island, even at the junction of three lakes. There are about 200 lakes nearby.
The main enemy of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania at that time was the Teutonic Order - this determined the massiveness of the fortifications and the choice of location.
The designed palace-castel of regular shape with a complex of residentials, church and outbuildings has a small courtyard. The center of the architectural ensemble of the castle is the prince's palace, surrounded by a thick fortress wall and protected by defensive towers.
The ceremonial rooms of the palace were decorated with stained-glass windows and frescoes, the main subjects for which were scenes from the life of the great dukes.
The living apartments were interconnected by internal galleries. Between the prince's bedroom and the treasury chamber there was a secret passage that led to the courtyard.
As is evident from the Lithuanian chronicles, even the saddles in the castle were gold.
The days of prosperity, power and glory of Trakai Castle shine in the amber light of the evening illumination, slowly look through the lancet windows, slumber behind the glass cases ... But sometimes their footsteps are heard in the wooden passages or on the stone stairs.
